Second 50

What happens when wise women come together?

Second 50 is an ecosystem of Australian women exploring what it means to live, contribute and thrive in the second half of life. Some women join because they are navigating change. Others are seeking fresh ideas, meaningful connections or a greater sense of purpose. Many arrive with questions about what comes next. What they often discover is a community of thoughtful women willing to share wisdom, experience, encouragement and opportunities.

Through conversations, shared experiences and member-led initiatives, women explore new possibilities, support one another and create positive change together. This is not a place where anyone has all the answers. It is a place where women help one another ask better questions.

The question that started it all

As Carolyn Betts approached 50, she found herself asking: in a potentially 100-year life, what do I want to do with my Second 50, and how do I make a longer life worth living? By most external measures, life was successful. Carolyn had built several careers, raised a family and contributed to causes she cared about. Yet she was increasingly questioning how she was using her time and energy, what still felt meaningful and what else might be possible.

When she began talking with other women, she discovered she was not alone. One conversation became ten, then dozens, then hundreds. Women spoke about work, purpose, ageism, caregiving, health, relationships, identity, and the constant transitions of midlife. Many had been too busy working, caring and holding everything together to pause and imagine what they wanted from the second half of their lives. But once they did, the conversations opened up. Women spoke about feeling invisible and underused, but also about freedom, contribution, and the possibility of creating something new. Again and again, one question emerged: What might become possible if women had stronger networks, meaningful learning experiences and places to share ideas, wisdom and opportunities?

That question became Second 50: a growing ecosystem built on collective wisdom and reciprocity, where women support one another, explore new directions, build purpose-led businesses and projects, and create possibilities that may not have emerged on their own. Carolyn continues to shape Second 50 as its founder and co-leader — a place for women who care about what comes next and know they do not have to navigate it alone.

Second 50 was founded by Carolyn Betts, but it has never been intended as a community built by one woman. It is growing through co-creation and co-leadership, with experienced women stepping forward to lead initiatives, facilitate learning and help shape what comes next.

Carolyn is a marketing, communications and community-building leader who has spent her career helping organisations, founders and teams turn ideas into clear visions, strong brands and practical paths forward.

Women do not only join Second 50. They help shape it.

Second 50 is not something delivered to members. It is something women help bring to life through conversations, connections, shared experience, encouragement and ideas.

Participation looks different for every woman. Some listen and learn. Others make introductions, host gatherings, lead initiatives or help another woman move a possibility forward.
